Outdoor Education
August 29, 2011
Outdoor Ed
Juniors Only!!
What is Outdoor Ed?
Outdoor Ed is a fun way for juniors to earn PE credit. Again this year there are a wide variety of activities to choose from and enough spaces for everyone in the junior class to participate. Options for 2011/2012 may include: Backpacking, Canoeing, Cycling, “Golf”, Kayaking, Horseback Riding, and Mountain Biking.
When is Outdoor Ed?
Outdoor Ed consists of two class times held on two evenings during the first three weeks of school and a weekend trip from September 9 through 11, 2011.
Is there a charge?
Yes. The cost for the classes will be between $50 and $125 per person depending on the activity.
How do I register for the class?
Register for the class of your choice at the Outdoor Ed booth during registration on August 21, 2011. Please plan to pay for the class when you register.
What do I have to do to get PE credit?
You must attend all classes, complete any homework assigned, and participate in the weekend trip to get class credit. Students who complete Outdoor Ed are granted one (1) PE credit.
What will I need to take on the trip?
You will need a sleeping bag, sleeping pad, basic personal hygiene items, flashlight, warm jacket, and a leak-proof water bottle for all of the trips. Additional items will be needed depending on the activity you choose. For example: backpacking will require a backpack and sturdy hiking shoes; mountain biking will require a suitable bike and helmet.
A complete list of gear needed will be available at registration.
How can I get more information?
You may contact Cindy Williams at (509) 245-3616 if you have any questions or need more information.

Prayer Guradians Still Needed
August 16, 2011
Prayer PATCH
UCA is still in need of 175 Prayer guardians
UCA’s Prayer PATCH program matches prayer guardians with individual students/staff in order to pray for them by name. We are currently still in need of 175 guardians. School starts August 22. If you are willing to be one of those willing to “stand in the gap” please contact Linnea Torkelsen, current program coordinator, at alumni@ucaa.org. or call 509-245-3692 and leave your contact information. Thank you!
Each year, UCA looks for volunteers that are willing to “adopt” one or more UCA students to pray for them by name. It is the goal to find at least two prayer guardians for each senior, since that is a transitional year in their lives. That means that in addition to parents and staff who pray daily, more than 250 prayer guardians surround the UCA campus, it’s students and staff in prayer on a regular basis.
The volunteers are requested to contact their student at least once during the year, to let them know they are being prayed for, and if the prayer guardian is willing, to send a small “care package” now and again. However, the program is about prayer, and that is the most important gift of all.
Prayer PATCH is a program that was started almost 2 decades ago by then conference president’s wife, Sue Patzer. It has since been directed by Sandy Mason at Upper Columbia Conference, and now, Linnea Torkelsen, UCA Alumni and Development Director, with the help of Katie Spoo ’96 and Laura Grinnell
