Q & A
Q: Will the student be able to have his/her own software on the laptop?
A: Yes. Students will be able to have their own software on the laptop as long as the software is licensed appropriately and meets the Media Use Policy. The UCA IT department will help students install new software on the laptop.
Q: Will the student still be able to bring his/her own computer?
A: UCA will provide a laptop for every student. However, if a student feels he/she would like to bring a different computer, it is allowed only with a dean’s permission. The computer will be stored in a secure locker and may be used in a designated room.
Q: Will UCA’s Internet be able to handle a load of 250+ laptops on campus?
A: Yes. Beginning this summer, UCA will be moving to a faster internet connection that will provide 100 Mbps bandwidth.
Q: Will the USB ports on the laptop be turned off?
A: No. The USB ports will be available to the students on their laptops.
Q: Will these laptop computers perform well?
A: Yes. The laptop computers UCA will have are high quality, high performing laptops that should be able to follow the students through UCA and continue with them through college.
Q: Are there going to be any additional costs to the student for the laptop program?
A: No. The current $100 technology fee will stay the same. We do not expect any additional costs.
Q: Could a student keep the laptop following graduation?
A: Yes. A student may choose if he/she would like to buy the laptop after their senior year. Below is a chart for the cost of purchasing the laptop based on how many years the laptop has been used:
- 1 Year $750
- 2 Years $500
- 3 Years $250
- 4 Years $1
Q: Who is responsible for theft, loss, or damage incurred by carelessness?
A: The laptops are under warranty from UCA. The student’s parents and/or legal guardians are responsible for theft, loss, or damage incurred by carelessness. Insurance will be available to the parents or legal guardians if they choose.
